The Riverton High School girls tennis team has fared well this season as it heads into region and state competition.

Head coach Ryan Nelson is in his second season and is excited about the depth and athleticism of the team. “We feel really confident going into region,” he said. “We’ve played pretty well this fall and lost a few really close matches but overall we feel strong.”

In dual tournaments, the Silverwolves defeated Copper Hills (twice), Kearns (twice) and Hunter (twice), while losing to West Jordan (twice) and Bingham (twice).

The team consists of Maya Yerman (first singles), Bailey Rosewood (second singles), Melissa Brewster (third singles), along with the first doubles team of Andrea Mena and Stephanie Ench and Gabby Dider and Nicole Berrett, who have a 9-1 record at second doubles.

“The team in general is improving and that’s the main goal and I am pleased with their progression,” Nelson said. “It’s fun to see athletes improve and that’s really why you coach.”

In preparing for postseason play, Nelson is focusing on isolating specific struggles in key areas for each of his athletes to achieve their goal of every position qualifying for state. One point of emphasis for his team as well is mental preparation. “The girls are really learning the strategic side to the game and how to adjust mentally to throughout each match,” he said.

The Riverton junior varsity squad has also been enjoying success during the year, as it has only lost seven matches in the 10 dual tournaments in which it has participated.

Region was held Sept. 26-27 at Kearns. The state tournament will be held Oct. 4-6 at Liberty Park.
