Riverton High School was given the Commission on Youth Award by County Mayor Peter Corroon May 12 for its outstanding fundraising efforts during their annual Silver Rush campaign that netted $80,000 for the Family Support Center in December.

This is the third year that Riverton High School has received this award. Student Body Officers Sam Butterfield, Kirt Davis and Robert Murray accepted the award on behalf of the student body.

“It is great for our students to be recognized for their efforts but what has always been more significant for me are the life lessons that kids learn from giving of themselves to help those in need,” said Riverton Principal Stephen Park. “Our school has become well known for raising large sums of money but our kids learn more from the experience of giving and from the issue that they are supporting. Most kids in the school are more likely to remember the cause that we raised money for then they are the name of the agency that we supported. I am always amazed at the support of the community and the many hours that students put in all because they believe in the cause and want to help others. It gives me great hope for our future to know that these students will be our leaders.

COY is a volunteer advisory board of the Salt Lake County Division of Youth Services comprised of 32 people from various businesses, school districts, government and the community that are appointed by Corroon to advocate youth policies.
